Weight loss… it must really be new behavior!

Sunday, August 3rd, 2014

Individuals come to see me to overcome addictions, alcoholism, anger, anxiety, confidence, Crohn’s Disease and IBS, marriage counseling, PTSD, sales, career and sports performance, sleep disorders, and the list goes on – but an incredibly large percentage of them come for permanent weight loss. And… we have great success in our permanent weight loss program.

Our program for permanent weight loss has three phases and in order to achieve permanent weight loss – all three phases must be followed! One or even two won’t do it. For permanent weight loss the program must be completed.

First the individual finishes the weight loss phase. After the desired weight loss achieved – one must move into the re feeding phase. Re feeding is followed by life time maintenance. This is continuing and practicing the true behavioral changes that were accomplished during the weight loss and re feeding parts of our program.

Conventional weight loss programs fail because there is no permanent behavioral change. I hear popular radio personalities once a year, year after year extolling the virtues of this or that program. But… if those programs really worked, why do they gain their weight back each year?

One cannot continue with the same eating habits and patterns that made them heavy in the first place if they want their weight loss to be permanent, but almost all folks want to! Crazy isn’t it? If behaving a certain way towards food makes one heavy – why return to it? But with conventional diets there is no tool that enables permanent behavioral change!

Our program enables one to change their addictions to foods with the power of the subconscious mind through hypnosis. The only way that anyone can make permanent behavioral change in their eating habits is by altering the way that they relate with food in the cognitive maps of their subconscious mind.

Zero Tolerance – A requirement of permanent weight loss.

Monday, February 10th, 2014

We hear a lot today about “Zero Tolerance”. Frankly some of it makes no sense. A six year old boy either comes to school with a 1 ¼ inch plastic toy gun on a key chain or draws a picture of a gun and he is expelled from school. That doesn’t slightly approach common sense. But zero tolerance for harmful foods in weight loss makes a lot of sense.

Most diets last less than seventy two hours. Much less. Conventional diets continue to allow the dieter to eat foods that not only are responsible for the weight the individual gained in the first place, but actually trigger the dieter to want to eat and eat and eat – not only those foods, but other foods as well.

If one chooses to read the book Wheat Belly written by cardiologist William Davis, MD or Grain Brain written by neurologist David Perlmutter, MD, one can understand why some foods are not only harmful, but access the same neuro receptors that hard drugs do, making them want to eat more. I often make probably an overgeneralization to those that I treat for weight loss and that is, if it comes out of a bag, box or vending machine – its delays and impedes not only losing weight, but keeping it off permanently.zorb ball

So what’s the answer? The answer is don’t eat what made you heavy in the first place which was generally processed carbohydrates. They impede weight loss and one will gain back any unwanted weight. Make your credo to being slim and healthy, zero tolerance to processed carbohydrates.

I know when someone that I’m working with just doesn’t get it when they say “I just can’t wait to get down to ____weight, because then I can eat a ______. Why repeat behavior that made one heavy in the first place?

It’s a counterproductive cycle that must and can be stopped. Individuals that I work with notice that after discontinuing processed carbohydrates for generally four days – their appetite not only drops, but their desire for these foods disappears. But… if one does not have a Zero Tolerance for eliminating them from one’s diet, their desire for them will immediately return.

The bad news is that it’s next to impossible to achieve zero tolerance with the will power and discipline of the conscious mind. Zero tolerance using will power and discipline alone lasts most often under an hour. The good news is that obtaining zero tolerance with hypnosis makes it a no brainer! Why? Zero tolerance is readily achievable in the subconscious mind because hypnosis is the bridge to the subconscious. Hypnosis will enable one to go through the process of losing weight and keeping it off with zero tolerance.

My name is Bob Crow. I’m a behavioral therapist board certified in both clinical and medical hypnosis. If you would like to enlist your subconscious mind, that’s the part of your mind that’s 90% stronger than the conscious mind that you’ve been using to try to lose weight with, call me at 404.277.1827 for a no cost consultation. You can then determine if you want to lose weight the proven way with hypnosis as shown on Dr. Oz.

The Difference between a Goal and a Resolution

Monday, December 2nd, 2013

Every year at this time people begin to ponder the parts of their life they wish to change.  Usually by January 1st they have come up with a list of those changes.  They commit to change on New Year’s Eve after a few glasses of champagne.  For some that’s it.  They might not even remember them the next day, but most will bring them forward to the first week of the New Year.   They may even write them down.  These are their resolutions for the next year. Now here is the problem.  Goals, at least ones that will make a difference in your life, are hard.  People go back to work, credit card bills from the holidays and family issues and all their good intentions fly out the window.  If you have a life, then one worthwhile goal at a time is probably all you can handle.  However, most resolutions are not in the form of well written goals.  They are usually short, general and lacking any real detail.  In order to make a change and have that change become reality you must have a clear vision. Begin by choosing one goal.  Since you are going to focus on just one it should be important to you, the kind of goal that can change your life.  For example let’s say you want to lose 50 pounds. To write out this goal it is important to know more than just a number dong fang qi mo.  I like to use SMART goals as a template. Specific: I want to lose 50 pounds. Measurable: I want to lose 50 pounds in 1 year at a rate of approximately 4 lbs. per month. Achievable:  The goal is an achievable and accepted weight loss goal and should not be difficult.  I will keep track of current calories consumed and cut 500 calories per day from my current diet and that will equal one pound of weight loss per week.  At that rate I should lose approximately 50 pounds in 1 year. Realistic:  I will adjust calories if I plateau so that the weight loss continues at 1 pound per week rate. This goal becomes even more realistic by developing a daily exercise habit.  I will be realistic and start with 20 minutes of walking 6 days per week.   I will add to this as my fitness level increases.  I will also check into a gym or home equipment so that the weather and boredom does not become an obstacle. Timed: 1 year is the time allotted to this goal.  Because this goal is SMART, all I need to do is stick to the plan. When you read back over this goal now, you can see that it fits all the SMART criteria and makes sense in a way that the original resolution did not.  When you use a structure to write your goals they become a viable goal with a plan implicit and that will make all the difference.

A weight loss diet that doesn’t utilize behavioral change, is doomed to fail!

Friday, October 18th, 2013

Many that want to lose their excess weight, think that they can lose it without making behavioral change. Wrong! Since their old behavior allowed them to become heavy, they must make permanent behavioral change or they’ll continue to regain and to be overweight. An overweight person’s behavior allows them to gain three to seven pounds a year, year after year until they are seriously heavy. The behavior that allowed them to become overweight must be changed, if they desire permanent weight loss! Conventional weight loss diets only allow one to lose weight temporarily.

I’m Bob Crow. I’m a behavioral therapist that utilizes hypnosis in my weight loss practice in Atlanta, Georgia. The crux of my program is true behavioral change. Anything else is just another conventional weight loss diet. Doomed to fail. Some cost more than others because they market better, but the theme is the same – you can lose weight effortlessly with this pill or with that diet.

Many are more interested in how easy or effortlessly the program promises to be rather than doing what it takes to lose and stay thin and healthy. One weight loss “system” touts that you can continue to eat “pasta, pizza and pot roast” – and then they show a woman with a very flat stomach that obviously does not eat “pasta, pizza and pot roast”. In the Atlanta market we continually hear radio or TV personalities touting a weight loss program that they are using. Only they are needing to go back on the program again and again because they gained their weight back on a vacation or a trip to Hawaii or through the holidays.  They’re promoting the same program that they used last year, the year before and the year before that. Obviously those programs aren’t about “permanent” weight loss.

And to those individuals whose primary motivation is only event driven weight loss – like to be able to fit into a wedding dress, a formal gown or a sport coat, and then as soon as the event is over, to return to their old eating habits again – I can only say to them “don’t settle for that, you can lose that excess weight and keep it off”. Otherwise they will yo yo throughout their life going from what promises to be one quick fix weight loss fix after another. Like “only eat such and such foods together”. Or “try the Akron or Peoria” diets. (joke). Or “don’t eat foods that begin with the letter ___ on Mondays and Thursday.” Or this pill will burn off fat… effortlessly while you sleep.

We utilize hypnosis in a number of ways to enable an individual to make permanent behavioral change in our weight loss program. If through hypnosis you no longer want to eat certain foods. There’s no downside is there?

Our program is like nothing you’ve ever done before. If you’ve given up. If you want to lose weight, not be hungry, not crave certain food and keep the  weight off permanently –  and not just look okay for the high school reunion, I invite you to call Bob Crow at 404.277.1827 for a complimentary consultation.

Weekends… a chronic weight loss enemy that needs to be defeated!

Sunday, August 25th, 2013

My name is Bob Crow. I’m a behavioral therapist board certified in both clinical and medical hypnosis.  Hypnosis is not our only therapy… but by far it’s the most effective. I work with those that desire to lose weight through hypnosis, in Atlanta, Georgia.

Many of these individuals are tired of the weight loss roller coaster and seek a permanent weight loss solution through hypnosis in Atlanta. The program consists of three phases and it’s most important to finish all three to assure permanent weight loss. The three phases are the weight loss phase. The re feeding phase is where some of the foods that weren’t available in the weight loss phase are re introduced under controlled conditions. And lastly, the maintenance phase which enables one to not regain the weight they’ve lost.

Those that stick to my program seven days a week – have great success. You noticed that I said seven days. Not five. Not six. But seven days a week. But most people when they’ve tried conventional weight loss programs, took the weekend off! But if you take the weekend off, whatever calorie deficit achieved through the week, will be lost on Friday night, Saturday and Sunday. Many that say they’d like to lose weight have been doing it that way for years, but with no lasting long term success. The eating cues most often come from events or places.

What is it about weekends that causes most diets to tank? Well on the weekends the daily routine is changed. Many get up later which allows their blood glucose to drop to lower levels than it would be when they get up through the week. They eat later and absent mindedly eat what they shouldn’t. With their daily routine changed the opportunity is there to eat foods that aren’t in the weight loss phase. Samples available at Costco and other grocery stores. Tail gate parties, weddings and ball games. Also if they go to the mall, they are off their eating schedule, so they go to the food courts located in the malls.

One’s weekend might start this way. Friends are met after work. The friends get there before you do and order drinks and chips. Before you arrived, you were determined not to eat what’s detrimental to you, but the appetizers and maybe your favorite drink await you. And… well a couple of nachos won’t hurt. Will they? Actually yes. When one eats the foods that they shouldn’t in the weight loss phase, they’ll re-awaken their desire for those foods and won’t be able to eat just two, or three or four chips or whatever it is.

One of your new behavioral changes will be to view food as fuel for your body and mind! The old you, viewed food as entertainment, something to make you or feel better or something to do. So if you hang out people on the weekends that still look at food this way, you’ll do what they do. You’ll eat! And if you eat the things that put the weight on you in the first place, you’re guaranteeing that you’ll destroy your hard won week’s progress. By the way…don’t make your weight loss program a topic of table conversation either. Friends don’t know how to lose weight and keep it off. They only have opinions!

Is there a way to break the cycle of five weight loss days followed by the diet destroying days on the weekends? Yes there is! It’s hypnotherapy. Hypnosis will enable you to not want to take the weekend off and to avoid many of the things that you did to sabotage yourself in the past. If you’re serious about losing excess weight and want to make the behavioral changes that will enable you to do so, I invite you to call Bob Crow for a complimentary consultation to get you onto the road to your last weight loss program ever!

Need to… or want to – which is more important?

Wednesday, July 24th, 2013

My name is Bob Crow. I’m a behavioral therapist that is board certified in both clinical and medical hypnotherapy. I practice in Atlanta, Georgia at the Atlanta Center for Behavioral Change.

With hypnotherapy it’s impossible for me to make someone do something that they don’t want to do – stage hypnosis shows to the contrary. Hypnosis therapy will enable an individual to make behavioral changes that they want to make. There may be changes that they need to make, but wanting to make them is more important than needing to make them. The want to needs to be stronger than the need to!

For example – the evidence is undisputable that cigarette smoking does cause several kinds of cancer in addition to lung cancer. The 5000 to 7000 carcinogenic agents in every cigarette are absorbed by the blood in the lungs. This blood is pumped throughout the entire body. Hence one can also contract testicular, ovarian, bladder, breast, kidney, liver and well you get the picture. The important thing is for a smoker to not only know that he or she needs to stop smoking, but more importantly that they must want to stop smoking as well.

An obese individual knows that a high fat, high sugar and high simple carbohydrate diet can bring on and exacerbate diabetes, colon cancer, breast cancer and heart disease. The most important thing is not for an individual to know that they need to immediately change their eating choices and habits, but more importantly that they want to change their eating behavior.

If a person wants to make a behavioral change, hypnosis by a qualified hypnotherapist most definitely is the best choice. The smoking and overeating habits reside in the cognitive maps of the subconscious mind, therefore resolutions to stop smoking or eat healthier and in the correct amounts won’t enable the individual to change because that person is trying to accomplish that with their conscious mind. Long term – that simply cannot be done. Remember – your want to must be greater than your need to!

I invite you to call me, Bob Crow for a consultation for any area of your life that you feel needs behavioral change. Call Bob Crow at 404.277.1827 at the Atlanta Center for Behavioral Change.

Over eating while under the influence!

Monday, July 20th, 2009

This is not a temperance blog! I occasionally enjoy a glass of wine with my dinner. But I will nurse one glass all night!  Remember this,  alcohol can be extremely hazardous to your weight loss. One of the worst effects that alcohol has on weight loss is that it’s all sugar. And your body will more readily metabolize those drinks or glasses of wine first, rather than body fat or other foods!

As in the case of people that I see with alcohol abuse problems,  one cannot have the fifth or sixth drink or seventh drink and maybe lose the entire weekend,  unless that person  has had the first drink.  It is not news to anyone reading this blog, that alcohol impairs one’s judgment. Period – no exceptions. Would you really want to fly on an airliner with a pilot that had been drinking? How about having a surgeon operate on you that’s been drinking as well?  Of course not.

What does this have to do with overeating? The word is inhibition. For those that are serious about losing weight,  the lowering of  inhibitions is disastrous. When someone’s inhibitions are affected, they either are unaware or do not believe they are lowered or non existent!!! For example – a person with a weight problem goes to a restaurant to have dinner with friends.  At that point the overweight person  is in control, but just barely.  He or she knows what food that they should order to eat.  But…  The waiter arrives  with the drinks,  now keep in mind, we are not talking about getting drunk.  By the time that the drink is half gone,  so are the inhibitions as well.  After the  second drink is started,  what’s left of good judgment is history. The person rationalizes that “these drinks won’t hurt” or  “this meal won’t matter” or “I’ve had a rough day” or “this is my birthday” or “I’ll really get back on my diet tomorrow!” Are these reasons or excuses? Why sabotage yourself  once again?

It is a proven fact that alcohol and weekends can be destructive when trying to lose weight.  You have been “good” all week and have cut back 600 calories. Do you realize that you can destroy that deficit and then some in a Friday night?  If you decide  it’s is more important to lose excess fat and keep it off,  rather than drinking for awhile, you will give yourself a large advantage.  It is easy enough to lose track of what and how much you are eating if you’ve had nothing to drink.  Chapter seven of my book deals with absent minded eating.  It points out that one always needs to be aware of what and how much they are eating.

Here’s something to remember – one glass of wine a day = one pound a month,  one vodka tonic a day = three pounds a month and one martini a day = close to nine pounds a month! We are not talking about giving up that glass of wine to enjoy with a meal forever,  but a tool to help you to jump start your weight loss program!

Absent minded eating.

Thursday, July 16th, 2009

While you were talking on the phone, you were eating potato chips. You got off the phone and discovered you had eaten the whole bag! A relationship  went in the hopper. While being upset about it and talking to a friend, you ate a whole container of cookie dough. You didn’t take time to eat lunch. By the time you got home you were  starved and felt awful. You needed something to bring your blood sugar up so you began to eat cheese and crackers while preparing dinner. When you finally realized what you were doing, you had already eaten a tube of crackers and a quarter of a pound of cheese!

Sound familiar? No one overeats because they’re  hungry. People over eat because they are upset,  worried,  bored,  hurting,  angry,  excited,  tired, depressed or even happy! Absented mind eating occurs when we are either distracted by a problem or an emotional occurrence or have deprived themselves of nourishment by not eating a balanced meal, thereby allowed their energy level to drop.

Although it sabotages your weight loss program as much as deliberately and knowingly eating too much, absent minded eating is insidious. You generally don’t realize what you’ve done until after the fact. The key is to be aware. Watch for signs of a mood shift or  energy drop.
